How can the eyelid without ceasing hold itself ready to protect the eye? How can I breathe and feel and hear without ceasing? Because all these are the functions of a healthy, natural life. And so, if the spiritual life be healthy, under the full power of the Holy Spirit, praying without ceasing will be natural. Pray Without Ceasing. Does it refer to continual acts of prayer, in which we are to persevere till we obtain, or to the spirit of prayerfulness that should animate us all the day? It includes both. The example of our Lord Jesus shows us this. We have to enter our closet for special seasons of prayer, we are at times to persevere there in importunate prayer. We are also all the day to walk in God's presence, with the whole heart set upon heavenly things. Without set times of prayer, the spirit of prayer will be dull and feeble. Without the continual prayerfulness, the set times will not avail. Pray Without Ceasing. Does that refer to prayer for ourselves or others? To both. It is because many confine it to themselves that they fail so in practicing it. It is only when the branch gives itself to bear fruit, more fruit, much fruit, that it can live a healthy life, and expect a rich inflow of sap. The death of Christ brought Him to the place of everlasting intercession. Your death with Him to sin and self, sets you free from the care of self and elevates you to the dignity of intercessor, one who can get life and blessing from God for others. Know your calling, begin this your work. Give yourself wholly to it, and before you know it you will be finding something of this "Praying always" within you.

That is not always correct, however, for men change. But, in our Savior's case, if we study His life, we may very well infer from what He did, what He will do, because He never changes! And, this is a comfortable reflection for us at this time, that in the days of His flesh, while He was yet on earth, He loved the company of His people! If He changes not, then He still, loves the company of His people. He did reveal Himself, then, to one. He will still speak comfortable words to His people when they are alone. One by one will He reveal Himself to them. He did speak graciously to two. Where Christians converse on holy things, they may still expect that Jesus will Himself draw near. But more, frequently He lingered longest and revealed Himself most in the assembly of His people. Where the eleven were, met, where many, were, gathered together, there the Savior came, not once, but twice and often. Learn, then, that we may expect Him here tonight! Peter, and James and John, are representatively here. Here, too, we have some of the goodly women the Marys and Marthas are here. They are waiting for Him. Their hearts are longing for Him. He is the same now as always. Brothers and sisters, we may expect Him! He will come to His old haunts. He will come and deal with His people as He did before. Twice, at least, we have it on record that our Savior came to His disciples, when they were, met on the first day of the week from, which I gather another comfortable thought, that as this is the first day of the week, we may for another reason expect Him to be here, to put honor on what now is the Lord's Day. He, at least twice, for so it is on record, came to His disciples and, standing in their midst, said, "Peace be unto you."

"He was moved with compassion." Matthew 9:36. This is, said of Christ Jesus several times in the New Testament. The original word is a very remarkable one. It is not, found in classic Greek. It is not, found in the Septuagint. The fact is, it was a word coined by the evangelists, themselves. They did not find one in the whole, Greek language that suited their purpose and, therefore, they had to make one. It is expressive of the deepest emotion a striving of the heart a yearning of the innermost nature with pity. As the dictionaries, tell us Ex intimis visceribus misericordia commoveor. I suppose, that when our Savior looked, upon certain sights, those who watched Him closely, perceived that His internal agitation was very great, His emotions were very deep and then, His face betrayed it His eyes gushed like fountains with tears and you saw that His big heart was ready to burst with pity for the sorrow upon, which His eyes were gazing. He was, moved with compassion. His whole nature was agitated with commiseration for the sufferers before Him. Now, although this word is not used many times even by the evangelists, yet it may be taken as a clue to the Savior's whole life and I intend thus to apply it to Him. If you would sum up the whole character of Christ in reference to ourselves, it might be, gathered into this one sentence, "He was moved with compassion." Upon this one point, we shall try to insist, now, and may God grant that good practical results may come of it. First, I shall lead your meditations to the great transactions of our Savior's life, secondly, to the special instances in which this expression is, used by the evangelists, thirdly, to the forethought, which He took on our behalf and, fourthly, to the personal testimony, which one's own recollections can furnish. Let us take a rapid survey of.

It sounds more like a song from a heavenly world than a plain statement of historical facts regarding a humble inhabitant of this world of ours, but such it is, and it is possible for each one of us to so live and act that it may be recorded of us, "He walked with God," and later, "then he was no more, because God took him away." The position of this verse in the Bible is significant and suggestive. There has been, in the verses immediately preceding, a very ordinary, commonplace, and, at first sight, long recital of how one man after another of the olden time lived so many years, fathered a son, continued to live so many years, and fathered other sons and daughters, and then died. Then suddenly Enoch is introduced and the story begins just as the other stories begin and goes on just as the other stories go on, and seems about to end just as the other stories end, but, no, there is this fresh breath from heaven and these melodious tones sound out: "Enoch walked with God, then he was no more, because God took him away." Then the story goes on again in the same old strain. Remember that this account belongs to a far away time, thousands of years before Christ, and about a thousand years before the Flood, and yet what depth of truth and beauty there is in it. Are there not lessons for us to learn from that far, far-away olden time? The entire authentic history of Enoch is contained in nine verses in the Bible, six in the Old Testament, three in the New. History outside of the Bible is utterly unacquainted with him, yet he stands out as one of the most remarkable and admirable men of whom history speaks, a man whom God honored as He has honored but one other member of the entire race. Enoch's greatness was the kind that pleases God. We are told in the 11th chapter of Hebrews and the fifth verse that "By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death, he could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God." Quite likely his greatness did not win very hearty commendation from his contemporaries. However, that was not of much consequence. His greatness did not consist of military renown, political power, profound scholarship, successful statesmanship, splendid artistic or architectural genius, or even of magnificent philanthropic achievement. It was greatness of a more quiet and less pretentious and visible nature, but of a far more real and lasting nature, it was greatness of character. "He walked with God," and God so enjoyed his fellowship that He took Enoch to be with Himself permanently. James Russell Miller was born near Frankfort Springs, Pennsylvania, on the banks of the Big Traverse, which according to his biographer, John T. Faris, is a merry little mill stream which drains one of the most beautiful valleys in the southern part of Beaver County. His parents were James Alexander Miller and Eleanor Creswell who were of Irish/Scottish stock. Miller was the second child of ten, but his older sister died before he was born. James and his sisters attended the district school in Hanover Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania until, when James was about fourteen, his father moved to a farm near Calcutta, Ohio. The children then went to the district school during the short winters and worked on the farm during summer. In 1857, James entered Beaver Academy and in 1862 he progressed to Westminster College, Pennsylvania, which he graduated in June 1862. Then in the autumn of that year he entered the theological seminary of the United Presbyterian Church at Allegheny, Pennsylvania.
