South of the Pecos
by Norm Bass
Part 1 of the Pecos series
In 1887 Texas rancher, Peyton Masters, better known as "Punch" by his friends and fellow ranchers along the Pecos River because of his tendencies to settle arguments with his fists, is about to drive three hundred head of cattle from his ranch on the Pecos River to the railhead in Odessa. But on the night before the drive is to start, a band of rustlers suddenly appear out of the dark, killing the cowboys riding watch, and stampeding the herd. After sending one of his men to request help from the Texas Rangers, Punch sets out after the rustlers with his widowed sister-in-law and co-owner of the ranch. Texas Rangers, Alvin Witherspoon and Chico Morales, also known as "The Cactus Casanovas" join Punch and Willow in the chase and a desperate race to the Rio Grande begins with plenty of action, shootouts, romance, and a few belly laughs along the way. I have always been an avid outdoorsman, who has spent most of my life in Colorado, hunting, fishing, and enjoying the backcountry. I became interested in writing at an early age and started writing my first novel at the age of fourteen. However, the project was abandoned when I developed other interests such as girls, cars, and sports. I joined the Army during the height of the Vietnam War and after graduating from helicopter flight school, I served a tour in Viet Nam where I logged over a thousand combat flight hours and survived three helicopter crashes. After returning from Viet Nam, I started writing about my Vietnam experiences and over the course of several years, I finally completed my memoirs.I married my wife, Bonnie, shortly before leaving the service and after completing my military obligation, we returned to Colorado where I originally planned to pursue a career in law enforcement. However, after dabbling in law enforcement, I found my niche in retail sporting goods and spent twenty years with a Denver based national sporting goods company. After a very successful career with that company, I went to work for a second national sporting goods retailer. My job responsibilities with both companies required a significant amount of policy and procedure writing, but I really didn't have time to do any creative writing until travel became a much bigger part of my job. When I was away from home, rather than spend my evenings in the hotel bar or watching TV, I again took up the pen and started writing western novels which became my real writing passion. My life-long interests and hobbies include western history, antique firearms, old cowboy junk, and Native American collectables. I think my hobbies and the expertise I gained as a result of those hobbies, has contributed significantly to the realism and detail correctness of my novels. Now that I am retired, I spend most of my time writing and enjoying life with my wife, Bonnie, on our small Colorado ranch, where we keep a couple of mules, horses, and raise Black Angus cattle. "Life don't get any better than that."

Beyond the Pecos
by Norm Bass
Part 2 of the Pecos series
In the spring of 1889 a band of ex-convicts are preying on the remote ranchers and homesteaders along the Pecos River in west Texas. When the local law enforcement officials are unable to put an end to the string of horse thefts, rapes, and murders; two Texas Rangers are dispatched to the region to capture or dispose of the outlaws and put an end to the atrocities. The Rangers catch up to the outlaws, but during the ensuing shootout, one of the Rangers is wounded and Ranger Alvin Witherspoon turns to his old friend, Punch Masters, for help in bringing the bandits to justice. The story continues as the chase resumes with more rapes, murders, shootouts, hangings, and a few twists along the way.
