About
A dark and funny tale of an ambitious young woman at a crucial turning point in her career and her relationship with her bi-polar mother. Louise (Julia Garcia Combs) is an insurance underwriter living in Los Angeles with her mother, May (Karen Black), who has recently been evicted from her Section 8 apartment after the building was condemned. Throw into the mix a budding romance between Louise and the local bartender, and we find ourselves in the midst of a gripping story of the joys and heartaches of mother-daughter relationships, and the intense emotional lives of three remarkable women living in the shadow of the Hollywood sign.

"Nothing Special is a raggedly charming indie with a strong central performance by Julia Garcia Combs amid a story set in a (literally) crazy Hollywood. A character-driven showcase for the talents of helmer Angela Garcia Combs, pic will likely draw minimal theatrical returns, although key perfs by vets Karen Black and Barbara Bain should add to the comedy's camp quotient."
John Anderson, Variety
"Karen Black is nothing short of spectacular... Barbara Bain is ideally cast... Laura Karpman's original score is a marvelous array of color, texture and shading... Everything is done with such loving care and sense of style that the appetite is whetted"
James Wegg, Rotten Tomatoes
"This courageous film is about nuance and introspection - a deliberate, careful and ultimately loving look at the dynamics among three women."
Sylvie Drake, Film Critic, Los Angeles Times
